Blooming Tuesday

This year I planted an old childhood favorite so I could make one of those pretty cotton boll wreaths for my winter front door.  This is an ornamental variety of cotton.  The flowers, just like the agricultural type, resemble hibiscus.

After they bloom, the fruit develops.  And hopefully (!) in another month we’ll be enjoying fresh fluffy white cotton.

Blooming Tuesday – 4 o’clock

This old fashioned flower likes to sleep late and take her time getting ready for the day.  I happen to have these plants in a partially shaded area, so they frequently forget and bloom in the morning anyway.  Meet 4 o’clock.

Blooming Tuesday

With hot sunny days to warm the soil, flower gardens are bursting with blooms and this past weekend I found myself drastically cutting back some of these fast growing perennials.  Meet scarlet bouvardia.

This is a favorite of butterflies and hummingbirds and blooms all summer long. One of my favorites for bringing cuttings indoors to enjoy too.

Blooming Tuesday

The days are getting longer and our gardens are exploding with color.  I mostly favor perennials myself, but my niece gave me a pretty succulent for my birthday.  And it’s blooming!  What a treat.  Tiny little coral-pink flowers with bright yellow middles.

Ornamental trees, shrubbery and flowering plants all support native wildlife.  Let me know if you have any photos from your garden to share on a future edition of Blooming Tuesday 🙂
